Alor is the least-visited part of East Nusa Tenggara — an unspoilt group of volcanic islands in the Lesser Sunda chain, paired with some of Indonesia’s most rewarding diving. Pristine reefs are home to scorpionfish and pygmy seahorses, and the crystal water — visibility up to forty metres — holds sunfish, reef sharks, hammerheads and even whales. Amandira’s eight-day expedition runs from Maumere in Flores through the Alor archipelago, the whole boat yours. This is the guide to chartering Amandira through Alor: the diving, a sample seven-night itinerary, the route, and how to book.
Amandira through Alor
The voyage boards at Maumere in Flores and cruises north past the sandy island of Pulau Babi and the small active volcano of Komba before reaching Alor — a cultural and marine-diversity hotspot. With a dive master and nitrox aboard, Amandira reaches sites that almost no one else does, anchoring under volcanoes and dining al fresco beneath the stars. There are no roads to most of it and few other boats; it is the definition of a private-yacht frontier.
Indonesia’s least-visited diving frontier, reached in Aman style.
The diving
Alor’s reefs are colourful and healthy, its volcanic topography exceptional — black-sand and muck diving for macro lovers, volcanic wall diving on Lapu volcano, and big-animal encounters from the smallest nudibranchs to passing whales. The seasonal mola mola — the world’s largest bony fish — is a stunning sight, and night dives reveal the most mesmerising critters after dark. Strong currents make Alor best suited to experienced divers, though the calm sites welcome all. The season runs May to July.
Volcanoes, whaling villages & ikat
Between dives, Alor reveals a culture as rich as its reefs. Visit Lamalera, the last traditional whaling village in Indonesia, where subsistence whaling is still done in the old way; breakfast on a remote sandbank with three volcanoes on the horizon; and explore the Pantar archipelago, its beaches settled by descendants of the seafaring Bugis. Ashore, discover the craft of the famed ikat fabric and perhaps a traditional war dance, capped by a beach barbecue with all the hallmarks of Aman service.
Aboard Amandira
A 52-metre phinisi for up to ten guests in five cabins, crewed by thirteen including two private chefs, a dive master and a spa therapist. Cabins are as spacious as an Aman suite; the foredeck is for sundowners and stargazing, the sundeck for yoga at first light. Itineraries are curated on a bespoke basis around your interests, from the diving to the culture ashore.
When to go & how to charter
Alor cruises run May to July, when the seas are calmest. The classic voyage is seven nights, boarding at Maumere in Flores. As Alor is a small, remote island, getting there is part of the adventure — flights route via Kupang, the provincial capital. To charter Amandira, send an inquiry — our desk confirms the dates, route and price and tailors the voyage to your party.
