Bali is the gateway to chartering in Indonesia. From Benoa Harbour on the island’s south coast a private yacht clears the Badung Strait in under an hour to reach the Nusa Islands — Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan — where manta rays patrol cleaning stations, the water turns gin-clear at Crystal Bay, and the Kelingking cliff falls a sheer 150 metres to a dragon-tail beach. Most Bali charters run as a day: out after breakfast, the islands and a swim, back alongside by evening. With more time, the same crew can carry you east to the Gili Islands or all the way to Komodo. This is the complete guide to a Bali yacht charter — the day-boat fleet, the islands, the season and how to book.
Bali by private yacht
Bali holds Indonesia’s largest day-charter fleet, berthed mainly at Benoa Harbour below Nusa Dua and Jimbaran. A charter takes the whole vessel — a sleek motor catamaran, a sailing day boat or a crewed motor yacht — with a captain, crew, snorkel gear and usually a chef or galley lunch aboard. Because the headline sights sit just across the strait, Bali runs two simple shapes: a full day to the Nusa Islands, or a half-day sunset cruise along the south coast. For longer voyages the island is also the embarkation point for crewed phinisi heading east to the Gili Islands, Moyo and Komodo.

The Nusa Islands — Penida & Lembongan
The classic Bali day points east to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. At Manta Bay (Manta Point) oceanic mantas circle a cleaning station year-round — snorkellers drift above them in open water. Crystal Bay is the clear-water anchorage, with seasonal mola mola (oceanic sunfish) in the cooler months. Ashore, Kelingking Beach — the T-Rex headland — is the island’s signature view, and Diamond and Atuh beaches cut into the eastern cliffs. Neighbouring Nusa Lembongan is calmer and greener: Mushroom Bay and the mangroves make an easy lunch-and-swim anchorage before the run home.
Sunset cruises & the south coast
Not every Bali charter crosses the strait. A half-day cruise stays on the south coast — a few hours out of Benoa past Nusa Dua and the Bukit cliffs, drinks on deck as the sun drops behind the Uluwatu headland, and back to harbour after dark. It is the simplest, most popular shape for a celebration, a proposal or a relaxed first evening, and it needs nothing more than the afternoon. Larger motor yachts and catamarans in the Bali fleet are set up exactly for this — sundecks, sound systems and a bar.
Beyond Bali — the Gilis, Moyo & Komodo
With a few nights, Bali becomes the start of a longer voyage. East across the Lombok Strait lie the Gili Islands — Trawangan, Meno and Air — with their turtle reefs and car-free sand, an easy overnight from Bali. Further on, crewed phinisi run multi-night passages to Moyo Island’s waterfalls and on to Komodo National Park, a week of dragons, Padar’s ridge and Pink Beach reached one-way from Bali. These longer trips are chartered on liveaboard phinisi and motor yachts — the same boat, crew and chef for the whole passage.
Which boat, and how long
For a Bali day, the fleet runs from fast motor catamarans and sailing day boats to large sundeck yachts for a party of fifty — all crewed, priced per day. A full day to the Nusa Islands is around eight hours; a sunset half-day is four. For an overnight to the Gilis or a one-way passage to Komodo, you move up to a crewed phinisi or motor yacht with cabins, a chef and dive gear aboard, chartered by the night. Rates vary widely by vessel and season, so rather than a single figure, compare each boat’s price on its page or send an inquiry for a tailored quote.
When to go, and how to get there
Bali day charters run year-round. The dry season, April to October, brings the calmest seas and clearest water across the strait — the best window for the Nusa Islands and snorkelling. The greener months either side are quieter and can be beautiful, with the south-coast sunset cruise good in almost any weather. Manta rays are seen year-round at Manta Point. Getting there is simple: fly into Denpasar (DPS) and board your boat at Benoa Harbour, twenty minutes from the airport. To charter, choose a boat and send an inquiry — our desk confirms availability, the route and the price before anything is paid.
