Everything you need to know to prepare for an unforgettable yacht charter experience, from booking to disembarkation and beyond.
Step 1
Determine your group size and composition. Yacht charters accommodate anywhere from 2 to 30+ guests depending on the vessel. Knowing your party size early helps narrow down the right yacht class.
Choose your destination carefully. The Mediterranean offers culture and cuisine, the Caribbean brings crystal-clear waters and laid-back vibes, while Southeast Asia delivers adventure and affordability. Consider the time of year for optimal weather.
Decide on your charter season. Peak seasons (June-August in the Med, December-April in the Caribbean) offer the best weather but higher prices. Shoulder seasons can provide excellent conditions at better value.
Set your budget early. Charter fees typically cover the yacht and crew, but additional costs include fuel (the APA), provisioning, port fees, and crew gratuity. A typical APA runs 25-35% of the charter fee.
Consider whether you want a crewed, skippered, or bareboat charter. Luxury crewed charters include a captain, chef, stewardess, and deckhands for a fully pampered experience.
Step 2
Gather all required travel documents well in advance. Ensure passports are valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Check visa requirements for every country in your itinerary.
Pack soft-sided luggage whenever possible. Hard suitcases are difficult to store on yachts. Most charter yachts provide beach towels, snorkeling gear, and water toys, so you can pack lighter than you think.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen and personal care products. Many charter destinations protect their marine environments, and reef-safe products are often required by law in places like Palau, Hawaii, and parts of the Caribbean.
Consult your doctor about motion sickness prevention and any vaccinations required for your destination. Bring sufficient prescription medications for the entire trip plus extra days.
Arrange travel insurance that specifically covers maritime activities, trip cancellation, and medical evacuation. Standard travel insurance may not cover all yacht charter scenarios.
Step 3
Arrive at the marina at the agreed time, typically between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM for embarkation. Your crew will be ready to welcome you aboard with a refreshing welcome drink.
The captain will conduct a mandatory safety briefing covering life jacket locations, fire extinguishers, emergency procedures, man-overboard protocol, and communication systems.
Your stewardess will give you a tour of the yacht including your cabin, the salon, dining areas, sun deck, and water toy storage. This is a great time to ask questions about onboard amenities.
Share your preferences for the week with the chef and crew. This includes wake-up times, meal preferences, activity interests, and any special celebrations planned during the charter.
Take a moment to settle into your cabin and relax. The first evening is typically spent at the dock or a nearby anchorage, giving everyone time to acclimate before the adventure begins.
Step 4
Remove shoes before stepping onto the yacht. The crew works hard to maintain pristine teak decks, and outdoor shoes can cause damage and leave marks. Most yachts provide deck shoes or you can go barefoot.
Be mindful of water and electricity usage. While luxury yachts have generators and watermakers, resources are still finite at sea. Take reasonable showers and turn off lights and air conditioning when leaving your cabin.
Crew gratuity is customary and expected in the yacht charter industry. The standard is 15-20% of the base charter fee, typically given in cash to the captain at the end of the charter for distribution.
Respect noise levels, especially in the evening. Sound travels easily across water, and many anchorages have quiet hours. Your crew can advise on local customs and regulations.
Communicate openly with your crew. They are there to make your experience exceptional. If something is not to your liking, a polite conversation early on ensures the rest of your charter is perfect.
Step 5
Snorkeling is available at virtually every anchorage. Most charter yachts carry quality snorkeling equipment for all guests. The crew will identify the best spots based on conditions and marine life.
Scuba diving may be arranged through the yacht or local dive operators. If you hold a certification, bring your card and logbook. Many destinations also offer introductory dives for beginners.
Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are perfect for exploring coastlines, caves, and mangroves. These are typically available on all charter yachts and require no prior experience.
Fishing opportunities vary by destination. Your crew can arrange trolling, fly fishing, or deep-sea fishing excursions. Catch-and-cook experiences with the onboard chef are a charter highlight.
Most luxury yachts carry an array of water toys including jet skis, seabobs, inflatable slides, wakeboards, and water skis. Your crew will provide instruction and ensure safety at all times.
Step 6
Provide feedback to your charter broker or company. Your insights help improve the experience for future guests and are greatly appreciated by the crew. Most companies send a post-charter survey.
Request photos and videos from the crew. Many professional crews document highlights of your trip and are happy to share their captures. Some yachts even have onboard photographers.
Consider rebooking early. Returning guests often receive preferential rates and first choice on dates. Many charter guests book their next trip before they have even disembarked.
Share your experience with friends and family. Word-of-mouth referrals often come with loyalty discounts from charter companies. Your broker can provide referral programs.
Keep your charter wardrobe and gear organized for your next voyage. Once you experience a yacht charter, it tends to become an annual tradition for many guests.
