Everything you might ask, before the lines are slipped.
How a crewed charter with us actually works — from the first inquiry and holding your dates, to seasons, pricing and life aboard. If your question is not here, a real person is a message away.
Booking & inquiries
It begins with a conversation.
There is no checkout and no card taken to start. You tell us the voyage; our charter desk does the rest.
How do I book a yacht charter?
Choose a vessel and send an inquiry — or simply tell us the dates, the cruising ground and your party size. Our charter desk confirms availability, the route and the price, holds the boat for you, and arranges every detail of the trip before anything is paid. You can start from any yacht page, from the planner, or by speaking to a person directly.
Do I pay when I send an inquiry?
No. Sending an inquiry takes no payment and commits you to nothing. It opens a conversation: we check that your preferred vessel and dates are free, prepare a tailored proposal, and answer your questions. Payment terms are set out later, in writing, in your charter agreement — only once you have chosen to go ahead.
How far in advance should I plan?
For peak weeks — Indonesia in the dry season, the Mediterranean in high summer, the Caribbean in winter — the finest vessels are reserved many months ahead, so the earlier you speak to us the wider your choice. That said, charters do come together quickly: in season, day boats in Bali and Phuket can often sail the same day or the next. Whatever your timeline, send an inquiry and we will tell you honestly what is open.
Can I design my own itinerary?
Yes — every charter is bespoke. You work with our team and, once aboard, with your captain to shape the route around what you love: quiet anchorages, reefs and dive sites, beach lunches, cultural stops ashore, or simply an unhurried pace. The captain reads the daily weather and tides and adjusts so each day is the best version of itself.
How long is a typical charter?
It depends on the vessel and the destination. Day boats in Bali and Phuket sail for a single day — a full day to the islands or a shorter sunset cruise. Overnight crewed yachts run on a minimum number of nights that varies by boat; three to four nights covers a headline region such as Komodo National Park, while five to seven nights allows a fuller loop or a one-way passage. We will recommend a length to match the route you have in mind.
Can I charter for a celebration or a private event?
Absolutely. Birthdays, anniversaries, honeymoons, family reunions and corporate retreats are among the most common reasons our guests charter. Tell us what you are marking and we will tailor the vessel, the route and the details — from the menu to a special anchorage for the evening — around the occasion.
Can you arrange more than the yacht?
Yes. We act as a single concierge for the whole journey — one number, one point of contact from the first inquiry to the last departure. Alongside the charter we can help with the connections around it, such as transfers to the harbour and, where it makes sense, a helicopter leg. Just tell us what you need and we will coordinate it.
Pricing & payment
A price per boat, for your dates.
Charter rates are quoted for the whole vessel and vary widely by boat and season — so we quote you, rather than print a single figure.
How is a charter priced?
A crewed charter is priced for the whole vessel — you take the entire boat and its crew, not a cabin. Overnight yachts are quoted per night; day boats are quoted per day. Rates range widely by vessel, size and season, which is why each yacht carries its own rate on its page and why, for a firm number on your exact dates, the most reliable path is to send an inquiry for a tailored quote.
What is usually included in the charter fee?
It varies by vessel and region, and the exact inclusions are confirmed for the boat you choose. As a guide, a crewed charter typically includes the yacht and its professional crew, the cruising permit and insurance, and use of the equipment aboard such as snorkelling gear and water toys. Day charters commonly include refreshments and lunch on board; longer voyages include the chef and full provisioning. Items such as certain national-park or harbour fees, premium drinks, special excursions and fuel above the allowance may be additional — all of which we set out clearly before you commit.
Is there a security deposit or a gratuity?
Many crewed charters carry a refundable security deposit and it is customary — though never obligatory — to tip the crew at the end of a charter as a reflection of the service. Because the amounts differ by vessel, region and charter agreement, we do not quote a fixed figure here; your proposal and agreement state exactly what applies, and we are always happy to advise on local custom.
How and when do I pay?
No payment is taken when you send an inquiry. Once you decide to go ahead, the payment schedule — what is due, and when — is set out in writing in your charter agreement before you commit. We will walk you through every line so there are no surprises.
Which currencies and payment methods do you accept?
Charters are typically quoted in the currency of the cruising ground — Indonesian charters are often priced in Indonesian Rupiah or US Dollars, Mediterranean charters in Euros. We accept bank and wire transfers and major cards, and can discuss the practical options for your booking. The specifics are confirmed with your proposal.
Destinations & seasons
Every water has its season.
We charter across Indonesia, Thailand, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean — each with a window when it is at its very best.
Where can I charter with YH Charter?
Across Indonesia — Bali and the Nusa Islands, Komodo National Park, Raja Ampat, the Banda Sea and Spice Islands, Wakatobi and Alor — as well as Thailand and the Andaman, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Tell us the experience you are after and we will point you to the cruising ground and the season that suit it best.
When is the best time to charter in Bali?
Bali day charters run year-round. The dry season, April to October, brings the calmest seas and clearest water — May to September is the sweet spot for the Nusa Islands and the run east. The greener November-to-March months are quieter, and the sunset cruise is good in almost any weather. Mantas at Manta Bay are seen year-round.
When is the best time to charter Komodo?
Komodo National Park runs roughly April to December, with the calmest seas and clearest water from April to October; the greener, wetter months either side are quieter and can be beautiful. Manta rays are seen year-round, with the biggest aggregations in the wet season. You reach the park by flying to Labuan Bajo (Komodo Airport), usually via Bali, and boarding your vessel in the harbour — park and ranger fees are arranged by the crew.
When is the best time to charter Phuket and the Andaman?
November to April — the dry northeast-monsoon season — brings calm, clear water and the best of Phang Nga Bay and the outer islands, and it is when the Similan and Surin national parks are open. May to October is wetter and windier, with sailing kept to the sheltered eastern bays, where prices fall and the bays are quieter.
When do the Mediterranean and Caribbean seasons run?
These two grounds neatly bookend the year: the Mediterranean is the classic summer charter, while the Caribbean comes into its own through the northern-hemisphere winter for warm-water island-hopping. Within each ground every coast has its own rhythm, so once you have a window in mind we will recommend the stretch of water that fits it.
How many days do I need?
For a single iconic day — the Nusa Islands from Bali, or Phang Nga Bay and Phi Phi from Phuket — a day charter is enough. To do a region justice, plan a few nights aboard: three to four nights covers the headline of Komodo, while five to seven nights opens up the quieter sites, a more relaxed pace, or a one-way passage between regions. We will size the trip to the route.
Can I cruise one-way or across borders?
Often, yes. Many regions lend themselves to a one-way passage — beginning at one harbour and ending at another, such as a run between Bali and Komodo. Where a route crosses into another country or a protected park, the necessary permits and paperwork are arranged for you; in Indonesia and Thailand, park, ranger and cruising permits are handled by the crew and the desk.
On board
Life aboard, on your terms.
Dining, water toys, connectivity and family days — what to expect once the lines are slipped and the harbour falls behind.
What is the dining like on board?
On crewed yachts a chef prepares meals tailored to your party. Before you sail you complete a preference sheet covering favourite dishes, dietary needs and allergies, and the galley plans around it — from a relaxed lunch at anchor to dinner under the stars. On day boats, refreshments and a lunch on board are commonly part of the day; the exact catering is confirmed for the boat you choose.
What water toys and activities are available?
Most vessels carry snorkelling gear, and many add paddleboards, kayaks and other toys; larger and expedition yachts often carry dive equipment, guides and tenders for reaching reefs and remote anchorages. The specific kit varies by boat, so we confirm what is aboard the vessel you choose. In the great dive grounds — Komodo, Raja Ampat, Wakatobi, the Similans in season — the crew plans the route around the tides and the best sites.
Is there Wi-Fi and connectivity on board?
Many modern yachts offer connectivity for messages and email, though it can be limited in remote waters far from shore — which is part of the appeal. If staying reliably connected matters for your charter, tell us and we will favour vessels with stronger communications and confirm what to expect for your route.
Is a charter suitable for families and children?
Very much so — family voyages are among our most popular. Calm anchorages, short crossings and gentle, high-reward snorkels such as Manta Bay and Crystal Bay off Bali suit younger guests well, and the crew tailors the pace and the day to your party. Tell us the ages travelling and we will match the boat and the route accordingly.
What happens in bad weather?
Your captain continuously monitors the forecast, the wind and the tides, and adjusts the itinerary to keep the charter safe and comfortable — sheltering in a protected bay or reshaping the day as needed. In some regions the season itself drives the plan: in the Andaman, for example, sailing focuses on the sheltered eastern bays during the wetter months. The route always bends to the conditions.
Crew & service
A crew aboard, a concierge ashore.
Almost every charter is fully crewed — and from first inquiry to last departure, a single point of contact stays with you.
Is the charter crewed?
Almost all of our charters are fully crewed: a professional captain and crew run the vessel, and on overnight yachts a chef cooks aboard. Crew numbers scale with the boat, from a small team on an intimate day boat or two-cabin phinisi to a larger complement on a luxury yacht. You are looked after throughout — you simply enjoy the voyage.
Who looks after me before and during the charter?
One concierge handles the whole journey — one number, one point of contact from the first message to the final departure. Before you sail, the charter desk confirms the vessel, the route and the details, and gathers your preferences. On the water, the captain and crew take over the day-to-day, working with you each evening to plan the next day.
Can you cater to dietary needs and special requests?
Yes. Dietary requirements, allergies, favourite cuisines, celebrations and particular wishes are captured on your preference sheet before departure and built into the charter. If there is something specific you would like — a surprise for an anniversary, a particular menu, a special anchorage — tell us in advance and we will arrange what we can.
Do you speak languages other than English?
Our team works primarily in English and also assists in Indonesian, with further languages across the wider group. If you would prefer to correspond in another language, let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Safety & assurance
Seasoned crews, sound vessels.
Experienced captains, properly equipped boats, and a desk that handles the permits and paperwork so you do not have to.
Are the yachts insured and equipped for safety?
Crewed charter vessels carry the cruising permit and insurance, and are equipped and crewed to operate safely in their waters. Your captain holds the relevant qualifications and runs a safety orientation before departure. We also recommend that guests hold personal travel insurance covering trip interruption, medical care and belongings.
Who arranges permits and park fees?
The crew and the charter desk do. In protected waters — Komodo and the Indonesian marine parks, the Similan and Surin national parks in Thailand, or the Mergui Archipelago — park, ranger and cruising permits are arranged on your behalf, with the relevant fees handled as part of the trip. You arrive and step aboard; the paperwork is taken care of.
What if my chosen vessel becomes unavailable?
In the rare event that a confirmed vessel cannot sail, our aim is always to keep your voyage on the water — by offering a comparable or better boat for your dates wherever possible. Because each booking is governed by its own charter agreement, the specific remedies that apply to you are set out there, in writing, and we will talk you through them.
Can I change the dates of my charter?
Date changes depend on the vessel being free for your new dates. Where the same boat is available, we will do our best to accommodate the change; where it is not, we will look at alternatives. As with all booking terms, exactly what applies is set out in your charter agreement, which we go through with you before you commit.
