What to Pack for a Yacht Charter

Packing for a yacht charter is different from a typical vacation. Storage space is limited, the dress code is relaxed, and everything you need for water activities is usually provided. Here is your definitive packing guide.
Choose the Right Bag
The most important packing rule: use soft-sided bags or duffel bags.
- •Rigid suitcases are extremely difficult to store on yachts — cabin closets and storage compartments are not designed for them.
- •A foldable duffel bag can be collapsed and stowed once you unpack.
- •Bring a small day bag or beach tote for shore excursions.
Tip: Most yacht crews will ask you to leave your luggage on the dock and will carry it aboard and unpack for you. Empty bags are then stored away.
Clothing Essentials
Yacht life is casual — you will spend most of your time in swimwear and cover-ups. Pack:
- •Swimwear: 3-4 swimsuits (so you always have a dry one ready)
- •Cover-ups and resort wear for daytime
- •Lightweight shorts and t-shirts
- •One smart casual outfit for fine dining ashore or a special onboard dinner
- •Light layers for cool evenings (a linen shirt or light cardigan)
- •A windbreaker or light rain jacket
- •Sun hat and sunglasses
For footwear: - Non-marking deck shoes or boat shoes (dark soles can leave marks on the deck) - Flip-flops or sandals for shore - Comfortable walking shoes for excursions
Tip: Leave the heels at home — they are impractical and can damage teak decks.
Sun Protection
Sun exposure on the water is intense — UV rays reflect off the surface. Essentials:
- •High-SPF reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+ recommended)
- •UV-protective rash guard for water activities
- •Wide-brimmed sun hat
- •Quality polarized sunglasses with a strap
- •Aloe vera or after-sun lotion
Tip: Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the marine environments you are visiting. Many charter destinations now require it by law.
Electronics & Gadgets
- •Waterproof phone case (essential for water activities and beach trips)
- •GoPro or underwater camera
- •Universal power adapter (check your yacht is plug type)
- •Portable charger / power bank
- •E-reader loaded with books
- •Headphones for quiet moments
Tip: Most yachts have onboard entertainment systems — you usually do not need to bring speakers or streaming devices.
What NOT to Pack
Leave these at home:
- •Rigid suitcases (as mentioned — soft bags only)
- •Excessive clothing (you will wear far less than you think)
- •High heels or dress shoes
- •Valuable jewelry (the salt air and water activities are not kind to fine jewelry)
- •Towels (the yacht provides beach and bath towels)
- •Snorkeling gear (provided on board unless you prefer your own)
- •Hair dryers (available in cabins)
- •Excessive toiletries (luxury yachts stock premium products)
